2000-2001 Roelien Pietersma-ter Borgh
Anyway, we would like to inform you about him and the progress that he has made. Marcial Marquinez has a disability being visually impaired and has followed a rehabilitation programme. He is attending the 7th grade at the boarding secondary school. Over the last year Marcial’s performance at school has been good; his favourite subject: mathematics. He enjoys football, watching TV and riding a bicycle. He says he would like to be a mechanic when he grows up. His family is composed of Marcial, his father - a bricklayer, Myriam, his mother - a maid, Sorley, his sister - a housewife and another sister, Madeley, who is attending the secondary school. PLAN International supports Marcial and his community through the work of many volunteers promoting different projects which will benefit the whole community either now or in the future. During last year, some of the benefits have been: technical assistance and financial support for the construction of hygienic latrines, organising workshops to train the families on hygiene habits and environment protection (many PLAN families lack adequate sanitary services in their homes); providing funding to purchase school supplies, training for teachers and to develop cultural and sport activities at school (PLAN is committed to making basic education a realistic achievement for all Foster Family children and one reason why children do not enrol in school is because their parents cannot afford to purchase the required school supplies); in case of specific needs within a family PLAN works with them on an individual basis.
