Social Activities' Archives
Annual Report - Club Year 2005/2006
Ágnes led the way in
September through to December and continued supporting the group leaders
as well as encourage members to start new activities. As she had been
very busy the year before, several new groups that had been introduced
quite recently took a life of their own, under her supportive and
contagious enthusiasm.
Then Liliane started in January. My first aim was to make sure that the
fruits of Ágnes' work carried on successfully. I also listened to
members around me to understand their expectations regarding our social
activities. We are not short of new ideas in the Club and I heard words
like Cinema, Drama, Music, Nutrition, Family Activities etc. Fantastic!!
However, we need coordinators/group leaders for each activity. So, just
like Ágnes did regularly, I have implored members constantly to come
forward to initiate new groups.
In February the Coordinators were invited to a gathering, which was a
very pleasant occasion. Some ladies felt that it would be beneficial to
plan activity dates 3 months in advance. Why not try that, without
obligation! It was also agreed that the Welcome to Sweden Support Group
(WSSG) had evolved into a service to members rather than a discussion
group, which is why it is now found on a new OBS page in the bulletin.
On that page members will find information that can make one’s social
life in Stockholm easier and nicer. Keep an eye on it, it will grow for
the better!
Spring is a time for birth. A new Spanish Conversation group started in
March for the pleasure of those who, like Yadira our Coordinator, love
Cervantes’ mother tongue.
One day, Brigitte Frick-Meijer quietly told me she would start another
walking group on Saturdays once a month, starting in April. What a
lovely idea for our ”family activities”!
What will the month of May bring to our social activities? First of all,
the hope that all the information that has been collected and put
together so far by the WSSG appears on the IWC website. It should help
newcomers in particular. The main topics researched so far are transport
and medical care. Many more will follow. I’m also counting on receiving
replies from 40+ of our Swedish members and I’m sure that several will
volunteer to take it in turn to lead the Swedish conversation group from
September 2006.
It remains for me to thank wholeheartedly all the IWC Coordinators.
Without their invaluable efforts and willingness to lead a group, the
fun, the interest and the conviviality generated by our Social
Activities would just simply disappear. Many thanks too to the
participants who make the work of the Coordinators so worthwhile.
Wishing you all a wonderful Summer holiday!
